IE 11 Has Vanished W8.1

I have my "download/install updates" options set so that nothing is installed unless I first OK it. Help! I do not have a router and am using a 'functioning' twisted Ethernet cable. No icon on Quick Launch, search on Start Button Search for INTERNET EXPLORER gets no hits.

One way is to open Internet Explorer from within the Desktop mode, which gives you visible tabs, the address bar, and easy access to the Internet Explorer options.
